I agree with the majority of these, but there is one excellent Tibetan Buddhist teacher I studied with, Chokyi Nyima Rinpoche, who believes that doing very short meditations well is better than forcing yourself to do really long ones that do not teach you anything except how to suffer while sitting still. I think a lot of the issue is that there are so many traditions that have words and concepts like ‘meditation’ that no one really knows what it means, except if they go along with a particular school of thought. The short meditation concept sems to go along with this concept about little bursts of exercise sometimes being better than a really long slog. I personally think that learning from some school of thought that has been doing it for a long time can help people really get benefits, and yet just relaxing for a short moment here and there, and longer moments sometime, is really restful too. I just think that if Buddhists or Zen folks or Christian or Jewish mystics or other schools of thought have been doing it for a couple of thousand years, they have learned a lot of what works when one is too tired or too agitated etc., so there is alot to learn from all of them.

See I didn’t understand what it took to meditate and this article summed it up, I don’t believe anybody does anything traditional anymore. My therapist certainly gave me short meditations to do.

I think that whatever works for you is great. Our lives are certainly different than the lives of folks in the past, AND YET, they had all the birth, death, sickness, aging, family, money/getting food, war stuff too. I figure I can learn from a lot of sources, from internet to someone else’s scriptures, to the comics!
